Die Video-Installation »Exposed by the Mask« verschmilzt Abbildungen von Masken aus verschiedenen Kulturen und Epochen mit Gesichtern von realen Personen unterschiedlichen Geschlechts, Alters und Ethnie. Eine Maske wird erst durch einen Träger zum Leben erweckt. Sie ist zugleich Oberfläche und Bild. Sie besteht aus Außen und Innen, die durch die Öffnungen der Maske in Verbindung stehen. Die Ambivalenz von Gesicht und Maske wird durch die lebendigen Augen, die durch die Augenhöhlen blicken sichtbar. Eine Maske ist ohne Träger jeden Sinns beraubt, sie verstummt und mutiert zu einem Objekt mit toter Oberfläche. Die Video-Installation »Exposed by the Mask« spürt dem Verwischen der Grenzen zwischen Gesicht und Maske nach. Das mit der Maske verschmolzene Gesicht verändert sich langsam aber stetig. Die Oberfläche der Maske wird durchlässig und erlangt den Blick eines lebendigen Subjekts, das zum Blicktausch auffordert. Wer ist Maske, wer ist Mensch?
The video installation »Exposed by the Mask« fuses images of masks from different cultures and periods with faces of real people of different gender, age and ethnicity. A mask is only brought to life by a wearer. It is both a surface and an image. It consists of outside and inside, which are connected through the openings of the mask. The ambivalence of face and mask becomes visible through the living eyes peering through the eye sockets of the mask. A mask is deprived of any meaning without a wearer, it falls silent and mutates into an object with a dead surface. The video installation »Exposed by the Mask« traces the blurring of the boundaries between face and mask. The face fused with the mask changes slowly but steadily. The surface of the mask becomes permeable and acquires the gaze of a living subject, inviting an exchange of glances. Who is mask, who is human?
